Our crop has to fight with more than 30,000 known species of Weeds for their growth and existence. As
per the past studies about 37% of yield reduction is caused by weeds alone. Weeds cause an annual loss
of about Rs. 1,980 cr. Indian agriculture, higher than cumulative losses caused by insects, pests, and
diseases. Weeds impudence the produce of farmers in several ways – they compete for light, moisture
and nutrients that in turn affect the quality and quantity of produce; they interfere with and damage
harvesting equipment; they harbor pests and diseases; toxic properties of weeds cause health problems
to humans and animals; they may contaminate aquatic resources, interferes and adversely affects
natural ecosystem. If we talk of weeds, they are of three types annual, biennials and perennials, out of
which perennial weeds are of the most difficult to control. This makes herbicides most vital to control
these weeds as the manual weeding is practically not possible by large attributing to the non availability
of labor.
Herbicides internationally holds more than 40% share out of the total agrochemicals market, but In India
it is only around 20%, which shows a huge potential to grow in the Indian market.
